Antique (circa 1890’s ) Turkmen Beshir wall hanging rug
Antique (circa 1890’s ) Turkmen Beshir (Turkish) rug/wall hanging.
Some fraying at edges in line with use and age. We would recommend having it mounted and framed to fully show it off.
The Turkmen were historically pastoral nomads and herders of sheep. The people known as Turkmen are made up of more than two dozen major tribal groups and were documented as living in Central Asia as early as the ninth century. The Turkmen carpet making tradition goes back as far. These dense textured, hand-woven woollen textile carpets have repeat patterned ornamentation and colour patterns relating to one of the five main Turkmen tribes.
Sourced from a small rug shop in a backstreet near the Hagia Sofia Mosque in Istanbul where the owner personally sources all his rugs and if needed repairs them in his shop.
