Margarita Sala Gaschen ceramic raku fired sculptural plate
Margarita Sala Gaschen ceramic raku fired plate.
Approximately 18.5 -19cm in diameter
Margarita Sala Gaschen is one of Spain’s most accomplished ceramic artists. Born in Barcelona in 1947, she studied at the Massana School of Applied Arts specializing in ceramics from 65 to 70 and has exhibited and been avidly collected since 1968.
Finding her work is no longer easy.
She uses the raku technique on this piece. It is a firing process in which the piece is removed from the kiln when bright red hot and subjected to post firing reduction or smoking by placing in a container with combustible materials. This blackens the raw clay and creates cracks in glazes.
Raw raku is a variation on this technique in which a slip is applied to the pot before it is placed in the raku kiln. The slip cracks and breaks apart during the firing process and is chipped off afterwards to reveal blackened cracking patterns.
