Vintage Sivas rug from Central Anatolia, Türkiye circa 1970s (49x47cm)
Sivas rugs are high-quality handwoven carpets from the historic weaving centre of Sivas in Central Anatolia, Turkey, known for their fine craftsmanship and elegant designs that blend traditional Anatolian elements with Persian-inspired floral, curvilinear, and medallion motifs. Typically made from high-quality wool—often with cotton foundations—they feature a relatively rich yet controlled colour palette of around eight to nine colours, with blue and madder red commonly dominant. While many display intricate floral patterns, some Kurdish-influenced examples incorporate more geometric or tribal designs. Influenced by both Ottoman court styles and regional nomadic traditions, Sivas rugs have long served as both functional floor coverings and decorative art, with late 19th- and early 20th-century pieces especially prized for their soft wool and natural dyes; notable Sivas prison rugs, woven as part of a rehabilitation program, are now rare and highly collectible.
