Vintage Yagcibedir rug from Western Anatolia, Turkiye circa 1980s (44 x 39cm)
A 1980s vintage rug from Western Anatolia, Türkiye c. 1980s (44cm x 39cm)
This Yağcıbedir rug is a high-quality, hand-knotted wool carpet from Western Anatolia in Turkey, particularly the Sındırgı and Bigadiç areas of Balıkesir Province, traditionally woven by the Yaycı Yörük (Turkoman) tribes. Known for their minimalist geometric designs, these rugs often feature diamond-shaped medallions, eight-pointed stars, stylized birds, the tree of life, and the Elibelinde motif. They use a distinctive, limited color palette of deep indigo blue, dark red, and white, occasionally accented with brown or cream, all dyed with natural root dyes. Made entirely from sheep’s wool using the symmetrical Turkish (Gördes) knot, they have a short, dense pile that makes them especially durable. Traditionally woven for dowries and carrying a heritage said to date back thousands of years, Yağcıbedir rugs—particularly the Sındırgı, Kepsut, and Bergama types—are highly collectible for their cultural significance, craftsmanship, and timeless rustic elegance.
