Vintage wool carpet from Milas in the Aegean Region of Türkiye circa 1980s (46x40cm)
This Milas rug is a traditional hand-knotted Turkish rug from the Milas district in southwestern Türkiye, known for its 100% wool construction, warm earthy tones, and distinctive geometric or stylized floral patterns. Dating back to the 16th century and rooted in the nomadic Yörük weaving tradition, these rugs were historically made as prayer rugs and often feature a mihrab (prayer niche), broad decorative borders, and a narrow central field. They are dyed with natural pigments in soft shades of red, brownish yellow, beige, and sometimes muted green. Durable yet soft, Milas rugs may also include cotton foundations in some variations, and they come in several named styles such as Ada Milas, Patlıcanlı (Aubergine), Cıngıllı Cafer, and Gemisuyu. Valued for their rustic and artistic character, they are often used to add warmth and authenticity to traditional or bohemian interiors.
