Designed by celebrated Finnish artist Ulla Procopé in collaboration with Göran Bäck, the Mahonki line is famous for its rich, glossy brown glaze and deep, dark horizontal bands that mimic the natural warmth of polished mahogany wood. Crafted from durable, heavy stoneware, it perfectly embodies the functional minimalism of the Nordic modernism era.
The Historical Twist:
What makes this specific piece incredibly unique is the original vintage paper label still intact on the base. This teapot was part of Finland’s historical bilateral trade with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The Russian export label features the Arabia export rooster logo, stamps it as "1 сорт" (First Grade / Premium Quality), and shows its original Soviet retail price of 9.50 Rubles. Finding a piece of Finnish design with its original Soviet import tag still preserved is highly uncommon, making this a fantastic cross-collectible piece for design lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks, or structural repairs. The glossy glaze remains vibrant with minimal surface wear consistent with age. The original Soviet paper tag on the base is partially weathered but highly legible. The text on the paper label is in Russian, which was standard practice for consumer goods imported into or distributed across the Soviet block.
